Five Days in Istanbul

Five days is the first length that is comfortable. You can put a whole day on the water, get out to Chora and the land walls, and still have a day in reserve for the one that goes wrong.

The plan

  • Days 1–3 — As the three-day plan, without hurrying any of it.
  • Day 4 — The Bosphorus properly: the long public ferry up towards Anadolu Kavağı, or Dolmabahçe in the morning and Ortaköy in the late afternoon with the bridge behind it.
  • Day 5, morning — Chora, out at Edirnekapı, and the land walls beside it. Check it is open before you go — it is far enough that a wasted trip costs a morning.
  • Day 5, afternoon — Downhill to Balat and Fener, then the ferry or the T5 back along the Golden Horn.

This is the shortest trip on which a day trip out of the city is a reasonable idea — but only just, and only the islands.

What this plan is built around

Not a list of sights, but the closures: the Grand Bazaar on Sundays, the mosques around each of the five daily prayers and for longer on Friday midday, the museums on their weekday, and how long a crossing actually takes once you have found the pier.
