The Istanbul Archaeological Museums, behind Topkapı, hold the Alexander Sarcophagus and a great
deal else, and are quiet on a day when everything around them is not. The Turkish and Islamic Arts
Museum on the Hippodrome is small, excellent and almost always empty. Istanbul Modern has a new
building on the water at Karaköy. The Museum of Innocence in Çukurcuma is a novel turned into a
museum and is not for everyone.
Most state museums have one, and it is not the same day everywhere; several have changed in
recent years. Check the day before you build a plan around one, and be aware that a Monday or a
Tuesday can take out more of your list than you expect.
There is a multi-day museum pass covering the state sites. Whether it saves money depends
entirely on how many of them you actually intend to enter and whether the ones you want are
included — Dolmabahçe, notably, is administered separately. Count the specific sites you want
before you buy, not the number on the card.
This section is being written. The guide above is the section for now. New articles are published across the site about twice a week rather than a section being filled in a day, so this page grows steadily — it is worth looking in again. In the meantime the sixteen sight pages and the plans by trip length are finished, and they are the best place to start.
