A week is enough to stop sightseeing. That is the point of it: two or three days of the list, then neighbourhoods, then a day out of the city, then a day doing nothing in particular, which in Istanbul is a genuine activity.
The plan
- Days 1–5 — The five-day plan, still without hurrying.
- Day 6 — Out of the city. Büyükada and the islands for a half-day; Bursa or Edirne for a whole one, starting early. Edirne is the pick if the domes are why you came — Sinan thought the Selimiye there was better than anything he built here.
- Day 7 — A neighbourhood day with no monuments in it. Kadıköy’s market and Moda’s waterfront, or Cihangir and Çukurcuma, or the Bosphorus villages north of Beşiktaş.
- Any day — A full Turkish breakfast that takes two hours, and a meyhane dinner that takes four. Both are worth planning a day around rather than fitting in.

With a week you can afford to go back to something a second time. Hagia Sophia at opening on a weekday is a different building from Hagia Sophia at noon.

What this plan is built around
Not a list of sights, but the closures: the Grand Bazaar on Sundays, the mosques around each of the five daily prayers and for longer on Friday midday, the museums on their weekday, and how long a crossing actually takes once you have found the pier.

Other lengths
Checked on 5 September 2026. Opening patterns and prayer-time closures change — confirm before you travel. All sixteen sights, one page each, in Landmarks & Sights.
