One Day in Istanbul

One day means Sultanahmet on foot plus one crossing by water, and nothing else. The single commonest mistake on a one-day trip is trying to add Beyoğlu; it is across a bridge and up a hill and it will cost you two hours you do not have.

The plan

  • Before 09:00 — Start at the Hippodrome while it is empty. It is free, unfenced and open at any hour, and the carved base of the obelisk reads best in low light.
  • 09:00 — The Blue Mosque, as soon as it opens to visitors after the first prayer. Free. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.
  • 10:00 — Hagia Sophia across the park. Decide at the gate whether you are doing the free prayer floor or buying the upper gallery — they are different doors.
  • 11:30 — The Basilica Cistern, five minutes away and twenty-five minutes long. Book a slot ahead in summer or skip it.
  • 12:30 — Walk down through the streets to Eminönü. Balık ekmek off one of the boats, standing up, looking at the bridge.
  • 14:00 — The Spice Bazaar, which is right there and open every day including Sunday.
  • 15:30 — The ferry. Eminönü to Kadıköy and straight back, or Karaköy to Üsküdar. One tap each way. Sit outside at the back.
  • 18:00 — Back on the European side with the light going. If you have anything left, walk up to Süleymaniye’s terrace, which is free and is the best view in the city.

⛔ If your one day is a Sunday, the Grand Bazaar is shut. This plan does not include it for exactly that reason — on a single day the Spice Bazaar is the better use of an hour anyway.

What this plan is built around

Not a list of sights, but the closures: the Grand Bazaar on Sundays, the mosques around each of the five daily prayers and for longer on Friday midday, the museums on their weekday, and how long a crossing actually takes once you have found the pier.
